Antique Carved Vegetable Ivory Spool Holder
English * Circa 1880
This little antique spool holder is carved from vegetable ivory in a very unusual form. The top and bottom are scalloped and pierced. A turned bone* spindle goes through the spool and has a vegetable ivory ring at the top. It holds a wooden spool of silk thread.
The
condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss. The ring at the top has a split, but I think that's so it can be removed to change the spool. It measures 2" high and the base is 1 1/4
" in diameter.
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
Vegetable Ivory comes from the corozo (tagua) nut of a South American palm tree. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honey color. The little spots and ivory like grain are also natural features of this material.
I stand behind everything that I offer and
guarantee
that it is exactly as presented.
** Full Insurance is included in the low shipping price for all of my auctions. **
I accept payment through PayPal, eBay or a check.
Join with others who love thimbles & needlework tools
Join Thimble Collectors International
Despite the name, this organization is for people who collect needlework tools And thimbles.
It's the largest collectors group in the world focusing on these wonderful little pieces of history.
The membership benefits are outstanding. They have a convention every two years where you'll have a chance to attend great programs and meet others sharing your interests.
You will receive an excellent quarterly magazine, the "Bulletin".
The member's sections of the website have dozens of research articles, hundreds of fake and repro items to beware of and price guides.
